Gain an insight into the fascinating culture, heritage, knowledge and modern-day life of the San – the descendants of South Africa’s first indigenous people – with a morning or afternoon San-guided experience and game drive, including lunch with !Khwa ttu San Education and Culture Centre.

The Experience and !Khwa ttu San Education and Culture Centre
Accompanying a group of qualified San guides, the one and a half-hour tour allows the San to demonstrate their skills, share their ancient knowledge about oral history, tracking animals and identify plants with you. You’ll also learn a few words in some of their languages and enlighten you about their recent achievements in obtaining their rights to land and intellectual property. Providing you with a unique experience to add to your bucket list, the tour is an opportunity for you to listen to accurate accounts of the past and present lives of the San.

The Tour and Game Drive
Start off with a friendly welcome from the San guides and an introduction to the history of !Khwa ttu after which you’ll board an open trailer and enjoy a slow drive through the hilly landscape.
The game drive gives you a chance to spot hundreds of plant species of the indigenous fynbos flora and a wide array of indigenous fauna, including Eland, Zebra, Oryx, Bontebok and Springbok. You’ll also get a chance to hear some of the stories about animals which form an important part of the vast San oral history.
Walking the nature trails gives you a chance to learn about hunting, gathering and tracking, and learn about both setting a traditional bird snare and storing water in ostrich eggs, as well as in-depth information about the use of specific plants

A visit to the replica traditional San village allows you to learn more about San hunting traditions and see the San women produce ostrich eggshell jewellery and demonstrate the use of digging sticks and gathering bags. You’ll be able to try your hand and shooting an arrow and lighting a fire the traditional way under the guidance of experienced San. Your tour ends with the guides’ description of some extraordinary aspects of the San’s social life such as the healing power of the trance dance and the traditional egalitarian society.
Finish off your day with a drink at the Boma and lunch in the restaurant, and you have the makings of an unforgettable experience.
