What to do in Gauteng

The smallest province in South Africa, Gauteng - Sesotho for "place of gold" – was built on a wealth of gold, accounting for 40% of the world's reserves. Home to the country’s largest city, as well as its administrative capital, the province is a diverse place, with cities compared to Los Angeles, with a similar urban sprawl as well as wide open spaces and an impressive network of malls, casinos, flea markets and suburban stores.

Home to a number of museums, including the Hector Pieterson Museum, Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill, Museum of Military History, Pretoria Art Museum and the Museum Africa, Gauteng is also home to the Cradle of Humankind, one of South Africa's eight Unesco World Heritage sites. The region of Sterkfontein, Swartkrans, Kromdraai also boast one of the world's richest concentrations of hominid fossils.

Johannesburg, Pretoria, Soweto, Cullinan and Magaliesburg all rank as Gauteng’s top attractions, offering a wide range of unique cultural experiences, Highveld grasslands and a number of game reserves.
