After much anticipation, bated breath and popular demand, Groupon PE is here! Even more exciting is the introduction of Mummenschanz! What better way to make a debut appearance than with a deal for an internationally acclaimed theatre show. In 2008 they had audiences across South Africa gasping, applauding, laughing, tapping toes, on their feet and waiting in anticipation to be first in line for the 2011 performance. Playing at the Port Elizabeth Opera House, these masters of illusions and make believe will have you making shadow finger puppets and dreaming of crazy creatures for months.
Mummenschanz is a Swiss theatre troupe whose performances have raised the roofs of some of the greatest theatres across the world. Thankfully, their Port Elizabeth performance takes place from 29 March to 3 April so roof or no roof, you can dress up and leave the rain coats at home.
Mummenschanz’s performances are notable for their use of surreal masks, seemingly normal yet imaginative props and the fact that they never forget their words. Their world class acting ability, mind boggling effects and perfect staging makes ordinary items like boxes and toilet paper come alive and jump off the stage – literally. By playing with light, movement and the audience’s sanity, Mummenschanz brings the unthinkable and unimaginable to the stage. It’s bound to be a performance discussed and re-enacted at many braais and office water coolers for many months to come.
Mummenschanz’s body masks (which isn’t just a fancy way of saying ‘elaborate costumes’) and bizarre ideas are best experienced live, so make use of Groupon and be the one everybody else is jealous of. Because not only did you see Mummenschanz live, you’ll also go down in history as one of the cool people to purchase one of the very first PE Groupons ever.
REVIEWS & RECOMMENDATIONS:
Once described by David Copperfield as "truly magical"
"Mummenschanz is a theatrical phenomenon not to be missed."
Brent Meersman, Mail and Guardian
Theatre fact #512: Theatre seats in the Middle East are stuffed with spice and herbs. This adds a lovely aroma to every stage production and leaves theatre goers feeling very happy no matter how good or bad the performance. Each theatre is now spiced to match the genre on stage, following an incident where an audience at a comedy show cried because of the chilli powder hanging in the air.
