Unlike the male sarong, Espatada’s are still popular and can be enjoyed in either a chicken or beef variation at Ga Rouge. Heck they’ll even throw in a second one and only expect R110 in return. Known throughout Pretoria for their elegant country charm and extra-ordinary fused gourmet, this restaurant that’s steeped in heritage prides itself on its ability to wow diners again and again with their delectable treats. While the front of house may look like a calm, cool and organised space, what goes on in the kitchen is a display of something quite different. Its in this kitchen that the chefs lovingly prepare the homemade garlic basting sauce that smothers each espetada before they are put on the hot flames to be grilled to perfection.

While the kitchen may appear to be a hub of cooking madness there is only one rule: You do not mistake the espetada for a kebab – something that the chef feels very strongly about. A kebab is the smaller counterpart of the all mighty Espetada and all who enter through Ga Rouge’s doors to enjoy this meal agree, leaving brandishing t-shirts stating “Espetada is king.”

Accompanied with golden fries and a peri-peri and red wine pepper and garlic cream sauce, you can be sure you’ll be displaying the same passion of a matador. Luckily the curtains of the restaurant aren’t red or you might take your love for these delicious espetadas a bit too far. Nobody likes a man standing on a table willing the waiter to come toward him while waving a red curtain, especially in a quiet and laid back, yet elegant establishment such as Ga Rouge.
