With a spectacular backdrop provided by the majestic Drakensberg Mountains, interiors saturated with sheer decadence and peppered with African flair, Jackalberry Game Lodge offers an elegant getaway for any nature lover. Situated in one of the world’s premier Big Five game viewing areas and sporting magnificent views, sumptuous cuisine and a restful ethnic ambience, there’s no better place to enjoy a run-in with nature. Luxurious chalet-style rooms provide a charming and comfortable spot to lay your head between game drives, kitted out with en-suite bathroom, air conditioning and private patios. When you’re not watching the birds, spotting wildlife or tucking in to a delicious meal, the Lodge also offers a swimming pool, curio shop, library, internet and satellite television and open-air dining around the fire in the boma. Sheer decadence topped with natural surroundings and a plethora of wildlife and bushveld to explore makes Jackalberry the go-to place for experiencing the Big Five.
Scenically nestled within the Thornybush Private Game Reserve, one of the world’s premier Big Five game viewing areas and surrounded by some of the most stunning views the Drakensberg Mountains have to offer, Jackalberry Game Lodge offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle. Surrounded by bush that teems with game, guests can spot the more than sixty species of wildlife which can be found in the immediate vicinity, including lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, elephant, hyena and cheetah on morning and afternoon game-drives undertaken by highly trained rangers and trackers. Walking safaris and bird-watching for the 280 recorded species in the area can also be enjoyed, giving guests a true bushveld experience.
This lodge may not be as well-known as some others in various private reserves near Kruger but it is spectacularly serene and comfortable. The managers (husband and wife) are very hospitable, the food excellent, the ranger and tracker (Floris/Lawrence) who drove us were unusually helpful. Come hell or high water they were going to show us the Big 5 and they did - several times. Our room was something out of a Ralph Lauren magazine spread. If the place weren't so far away we'd vacation there once a year. Forget about "understated elegance. The place is elegant, restful and fascinating
