Majestically positioned in the spectacular mountainous region of northern Zululand, the Pakamisa Private Game Reserve lies 15km from the small town of Pongola and is located in the centre of its own sweeping private game reserve. The reserve affords travellers breath-taking views over the emerald valleys and plains of the Pongola River. Blending unique Italo-Spanish architecture and African inspiration, the lodge hosts a maximum of 16 guests at a time and impresses guests with tastefully decorated suites offering high standards of comfort and convenience.

Access to the reserve is restricted, allowing guests to enjoy an exclusive game viewing experience in the wild African Bushveld. Boasting an abundance of wildlife and exotic vegetation, guests can expect to see leopard, giraffe, zebra, most buck, predators, reptiles and various bird life.

The lodge itself features eight meter high ceilings echoing back to tropic hotels of eras past and the main house embodies a quiet atmosphere ideal for unwinding. Parched guests can indulge in a drink at the Hunter’s Bar or simply dip a toe in the pool for a refreshing swim. There is also an extensive library for a wide array of literary delights available in various languages.

Guest may choose two activities per day including horse riding, a game drive, a guided bush walk, archery or target shooting with an air rifle.

What to do in Pongola

Situated only 10km from the Swaziland border, Pongola is a small town steeped in Anglo and Zulu Boer war history. Surrounded by abundant sugarcane fields, the town is a sub-tropical paradise on its own. Visitors to the town can enjoy Pongolapoort or the Jozini Dam, and avid golfers can take advantage of the nine-hole golf course. The Phongola River is famous for its deep pools and steep sides as well as its population of crocodiles and hippos, and it is among these river banks that fishermen will find a popular Tiger fishing spot. Travellers can also go game viewing at the Pongola Nature Reserve and Game Reserve, home to four of the Big 5. In the Pongola Bush Nature Reserve travellers will find a valuable part of the mist belt boasting evergreen forests and over 120 species of bird life. For those wanting to explore the river there are day cruises available on board the Shayamanzi while land-lovers can enjoy a shore-side visit to the Bivane Dam.
