What to do in Pretoria
Pretoria is known as the Jacaranda City due to the thousands of Jacaranda trees planted along its streets, and in parks and gardens. The city is home to the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa as well as the Pretoria National Botanical Garden. There are also a number of smaller parks and gardens located throughout the city, including the Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary.
One of the most popular sports in Pretoria is rugby. Catch a game at Loftus Versfeld, the stadium that is home to the Blue Bulls. With a history spanning some 350 years, the city has many monuments including the Voortrekker Monument with excellent city views from its observation area at the top. Other notable sights include Church Square, the City Hall, and the magnificent Union Buildings, which have served as the seat of South Africa's government for almost 100 years. Other nearby excursions include the town of Rustenberg, the Roodeplaat Dam, the asteroid crater of Soutpan and the Wonderboom Nature Reserve.
